Onigiri - Rice Triangles
The simplest Japanese snack: balls or triangles of rice with a filling, wrapped in nori. Perfect for a picnic under the cherry blossoms.
Ingredients
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 2.5 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Nori sheets
- Filling: tuna with mayo / salmon / umeboshi (pickled plum)
Method
- Cook the rice and let it cool slightly (it should be warm, not hot).
- Moisten your hands with salted water so the rice doesn't stick.
- Shape a portion of rice in your hand, make a hollow in the centre and add the filling.
- Form a triangle, pressing from three sides.
- Wrap with a strip of nori and serve.
💡 Paweł’s tip: Wet hands plus a pinch of salt are the key - that way the onigiri holds its shape and has flavour.
