How the sakura „wave” works

The cherry trees bloom in a wave from south to north. First Kyushu and the surrounding area come into flower (late March), then Kyoto/Tokyo (usually the turn of March and April), and Hokkaido only in early May. Peak bloom (mankai) in any given place lasts just a few days to a week.

The safest window

For the Tokyo–Kyoto area, aim for the last week of March and the first week of April. Statistically that's the safest bet - but nature doesn't read the calendar, so stay flexible by ±1 week.

The „chasing the bloom” strategy

If you arrive a touch too early or too late on Honshu, you can „catch up with” or „get ahead of” the wave by moving geographically: too early → head south (Kyushu), too late → head north (Tōhoku, then Hokkaido).

Where to look

• Kyoto: the Philosopher's Path, Maruyama-kōen, the Okazaki canal.
• Tokyo: Ueno Park, the Meguro River (evening illuminations), the Chidorigafuchi moat.
• Classic: Himeji Castle and Hirosaki - blossoms + architecture.

The price of this magic

Sakura is peak season: the most expensive flights and hotels, packed attractions. Book flights and accommodation 4–6 months ahead. It's the trip you need to „lock in” earliest of all.
