What the cost is made of
Five main items: the flight, accommodation, local transport, food, attractions. The flight and accommodation are usually the biggest items - and they're where you can save the most with good timing and booking ahead.
Three levels
- Budget: hostels and capsules, konbini food and cheap eateries, night buses and local transport. Japan is surprisingly affordable here.
- Comfortable: 3–4★ hotels in good locations, restaurants, Shinkansen/JR Pass. The sweet spot for most people.
- Premium: ryokan with kaiseki, wagyū beef, private transfers, exceptional experiences. There's practically no ceiling.
What moves the budget the most
- Timing: sakura, Golden Week, Obon and the autumn maples = the most expensive. Off-peak November or February can be much cheaper.
- Hotel location: a room „one station further out” can be a lot cheaper with no loss of convenience.
- Pace: constant travel = more spent on transport and less actually seen.
Where to save without it hurting
Lunch instead of dinner at expensive places (same kitchens, lower midday prices), konbini for breakfast, an IC card instead of single tickets, free attractions (temples, parks, neighbourhoods). Don't skimp on the location of your accommodation or on a healthy pace - that comes back to bite you.
