Two ends of the archipelago
It's hard to believe it's the same country. While a metre of powder is falling on Hokkaido, you can wade into the sea on Okinawa. These are two completely different ideas for a holiday - and both are the „real” Japan.
Hokkaido in winter
- Who it's for: skiers, lovers of onsen, quiet and nature, hunters of winter landscapes.
- Highlights: the best powder in the world (Niseko), the Sapporo Snow Festival, hot springs in the snow, seafood, miso ramen.
- When: December–March.
Okinawa in summer
- Who it's for: beach-goers, divers, anyone after relaxation and the distinct Ryūkyū culture.
- Highlights: turquoise sea, reefs and manta rays, its own cuisine and music, the lazy rhythm of the Yaeyama Islands.
- Note: July–September carries a typhoon risk; it's nicest in late spring and autumn.
Which to choose?
If it's your first trip to Japan - start with Honshu (Tokyo–Kyoto), and treat Hokkaido or Okinawa as a strong accent or the goal of your next journey. If you're coming back and want a „different” Japan - choose by season: winter → Hokkaido, warm weather → Okinawa.
💡 You can combine the contrasts in one trip (e.g. the cities + Okinawa's beaches), but you have to keep an eye on flight logistics. It's a rewarding subject to plan out together.
